ANOS Species List

Background

The Australasian Native Orchid Society Inc. (ANOS) has created a list of all described orchid species and natural hybrids together with the ANOS eligibility status of each orchid. ie. whether that species can be benched at ANOS meetings and shows. More information on the ANOS boundary from where ANOS eligibile species must naturally grow can be found on the ANOS boundary page.

This list of Orchid Species takes into account the ANOS nomenclature policy adopted on 31 October 2023 which specifies that ANOS will encourage and promote the use of the Kew/Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) accepted nomenclature as documented in the Kew Plants of the World Online (POWO) [or its successors] as updated from time to time plus the ANOS nomenclature policy exception adopted on 14 February 2025 postponing the acceptance of Phaius being subsumed into Calanthe. More information about POWO is available on their website and the ANOS nomenclature policy page.

This orchid species list will be updated several times a year to keep this list up to date with the current view of POWO taxonomy.

As with any work, there are bound to be some omissions or errors. Should you find any issues with this list, please advise the ANOS secretary at Secretary@ANOS.ORG.AU so issues can be corrected in the next release. Please include the issue and as much detail as possible to support the issue correction in your email.

The ANOS Species List is distributed as an Excel spreadsheet. It includes full instructions and documentation within the spreadsheet. This files works fully on a personal computer using Excel or equivalent software but does not work fully on spreadsheet software on many phones. Manual searching of the list will generally work on most phones. An online version of this spreadsheet is available below for use with any internet connected device. ANOS Species List Spreadsheet

Enter the orchid name or part of the name to see the ANOS status. If you do not find your species or natural hybrid, check the spelling or enter a shorter portion of the name. This list currently only includes orchid species and natural hybrids so do not try to lookup orchid hybrids.
